Third grade at Armstrong is an exciting year. Students enjoy a full curriculum planned by the district. In addition Armstrong adds some special enrichment activities that are listed below.
Social Studies- Study of Communities
The History of Dallas and the Park Cities, Old City Park Field Trip, Town Hall Walking Tour, Box City Project
The students learn about people and communities. They learn how communities are alike- information on the business part of town, recreation, meeting peoples' needs, and service workers. They learn how communities are different- in different places, how they are known for different things, different sizes-large, small, suburbs, and towns. They learn about the Community Governments and Services- rules, how government works, how communities provide services- services to protect us, public/private property, public works, transportation, health services, schools, libraries, parks, and museums. They learn how communities begin- places where communities begin- background information when creating community history. The students will learn the zoning rules for a community and create a plan for a city that follows the rules and then create the city out of boxes. Each student makes a home and creates a business for the Box City.
Country Research and Project
The students study the countries around the world. They research their customs, holidays, foods, resources, land forms, and the flag. As we study the countries, we will travel from classroom to classroom, chart a course on a hand- made globe, participate in games and festivals, and eat the traditional foods. The students will create and present a project on a country of their choice.
Science- Earth, Physical, and Life
The Study of the Solar System The students study the earth, the sun, and its family. The students choose topics to research and make presentations. The third graders visit the Highland Park High School Planetarium during the study.
Mathematics-Comprehensive Multiplication Facts
The students learn the multiplication times tables from 1-12. We celebrate mastery of the times tables with an ice cream sundae party. For each times table that is mastered on a timed test the student receives a part of the sundae. It is usually held at the end of the year.
Language Arts
The students are actively engaged in language studies through reading, standard conventions of spelling and grammar, handwriting, and reading/writing connections. The students master cursive writing by the end of the year. Reading includes a variety of experiences, some of which include the Library Multi-media Center, technology, Accelerated Reader, basal, novels, and Scholastic News.
